How can it support you?  ”If you can get the inside right the outside will fall into place.” – Eckhart Tolle

This is one of my favourite sayings by Eckhart Tolle an inspirational spiritual teacher and self-help author. This quote is exactly what the programme is all about. It will help the crew member to explore how they can strengthen many areas of their life. We recognise that learning about their own unique mind can often be forgotten about, especially when on board a busy vessel. The programme gives crew members the opportunity to reflect on various situations which can elevate their human growth.

The Maritime PGP programme helps the individual find out who the authentic you really is. Exploring their core values, helping to align themselves with their behaviours and supporting in understanding the mechanics of their own unique mind. Enabling crew to manage various conflicts and build stronger relationships not only on board the vessel but also in their private life.

The Maritime PGP supports the further development of a range of life skills that can enable individuals to leave a balanced, healthy enjoyable life. Life skills are usually defined as the abilities and behaviours that enable us to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life. UNICEF, UNESCO and WHO list the nine core life skill strategies and techniques as:

1. Problem Solving,

2. Critical Thinking,

3. Effective Communication Skills,

4. Decision-Making,

5. Creative Thinking,

6. Interpersonal relationship skills,

7. Self- awareness building skills,

8. Empathy,

9. Coping with stress and emotions.

The Maritime PGP actively engages and seeks to support participants to further develop their skills and abilities in all the nine areas. Critical thinking, problem solving, self-awareness building and coping with stress and emotions are in every chapter whilst effective communication skills, creative thinking, interpersonal relationship skills, empathy can be found in most chapters.

Why have we Developed this Programme?

\

The Maritime Industry are making steps in understanding the importance of self-care, the tools that are needed to guide crew are now being recognised.

\

There are different terms being used such as: Emotional Literacy, Emotional Awareness, Mental Health, whatever you choose to call it being able to manage various situations and understanding triggers has never been so important.

\

Mind management as we refer it to, is that missing link enabling us to get through the day in a productive manner letting go of various low-level emotions in real time.

Professor Vanessa Drusket who specialises in Team Leadership and Emotional Intelligence explains that workplaces are emotional incubators; she believes that: social situations are the largest trigger of emotions in human beings.

These are all natural emotions that we experience from time to time and what this programme will aid crew to do, is to further understand their triggers and by working through this programme the difference can be that I will have the mindset to say: What have I learnt from that? Rather than why did this happen to me.

Before embarking on any personal growth programme, we recommend for anyone that is currently struggling with anxiety or mental health issues, it is advisable to work with a mentor to support you whilst working through the programme. This can range from a trusted adult, peer group/friendship circles. If you are working with a therapist or a mental health practitioner you may want to seek their advice first.
